CAFOD PRAYERS for Friday 30th September 2011
Feast of St Jerome
“When your words came, I devoured them. Your word was my delight, and the joy of my heart, for I was called by your name, O Lord, my God.” Jeremiah 15:16
Pause to prepare yourself to read the Word Of God by quieting your mind and relaxing your body. Consciously let daily worries and distractions go, so as to honour the Lord with your full attention.
2 Timothy 3:14-17
You must keep to what you have been taught and know to be true; remember who your teachers were, and how, ever since you were a child, you have known the holy scriptures – from these you can learn the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All scripture is inspired by Gid and can profitably be used for teaching, for refuting error, for guiding people’s lives and teaching them to be holy. This is how the person who is dedicated to God becomes fully equipped and ready for any good work.
“Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you,Bethsaida! For if the mighty works done in you had been done inTyreandSidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. But it will be more bearable in the judgement forTyreandSidonthan for you. And you,Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You shall be brought down to Hades.
“The one who hears you hears me, and the one who rejects you rejects me, and the one who rejects me rejects him who sent me.”
Love the holy scriptures, and wisdom will love you. Love wisdom, and she will keep you safe. Honour wisdom, and she will embrace you. (St Jerome)
St Jerome was the foremost scripture scholar among the Church Fathers, a pioneer in biblical criticism.

Closing Prayer (All)
Thank you loving God
for the gift of life
for this wonderful world which we all share
for the joy of love and friendship.
for the challenge of helping to build your kingdom.
our determination to work for a world
of peace and justice
our conviction that, whatever our nationality or race, our culture or our creed,
we are all your loved creation
to challenge the powerful
with the values of the Gospel
to find non-violent ways of resolving conflict
to forgive injuries and love those
we find it hard to love.
Thank you loving God
for the gift of your Word
for the gift of your Son, our Lord Jesus the Christ
in whose name we pray.
