Clive Jones CBE
“Is It A Disaster If It Does Not Make The Ten O’clock News?”
Date: 19 February 2014
Time: 6.00 pm
Venue: University of Salford, MediaCity
You are invited to join the University of Salford for a special and thought provoking lecture from one of the most respected individuals in broadcasting at 6.00 pm on Wednesday 19 February 2014 at our MediaCity campus.
For 3 years Clive Jones has chaired The Disasters Emergency Committee, the umbrella organisation that unites all the UK’s leading aid and humanitarian agencies. The DEC is a remarkable organisation that in the 21st century alone has raised more than a billion pounds to ease suffering in the wake of the Asian Tsunami, the Pakistani Floods, the Haiti earthquake, the East African Famine and more recently the refugee Crisis in Syria and surrounding countries.
In his television career Clive was CEO of three major ITV companies including Central and Carlton and chaired GMTV. After taking the Carlton Television group in the merger with Granada to form ITV plc he became Chief Executive of ITV News and Regions.
This lecture will see Clive concentrate on fifty years of the Disasters Emergency Committee and the unique collaboration between the fourteen leading British humanitarian aid organisations, the media and the British public – a partnership that has had an immediate and direct impact on the lives of millions of vulnerable people facing the most challenging situations imaginable. Additionally Clive will reflect upon his forty plus years in journalism and television touching upon both topics as we move into a new age of regulation and one hundred years of the BBC.
The University of Salford is proud to support vital research that has contributed to disaster resilience worldwide. Our Centre for Disaster Resilience (CDR) is a multi-disciplinary centre committed to improving the ability of countries and communities to plan for, and recover from, natural and man-made disasters.
