Monthly Prayers March 2017

The opening prayer-

“The Open Gate” (David Adam)

The Lord is with us,

with might to protect us,

with strength to defend us.

The Lord is with us.

The Lord is with us,

with wisdom to guide us,

with peace to refresh us.

The Lord is with us.

The Lord is with us,

with love to enfold us,

with joy to crown us.

The Lord is with us.

The Lord is with us,

this day and this night,

now and for ever.

The Lord is with us.

Lord, we pray to you this morning for your strength and wisdom, your peace and joy, so that we can embody your love in the world.  We pray in Jesus’s name.  Amen.

Scripture   Isaiah 55:10-11

10 For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven,     and do not return there until they have watered the earth,     making it bring forth and sprout,     giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, 11  so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth;     it shall not return to me empty,     but it shall accomplish that which I purpose,     and succeed in the thing for which I sent it.

Matthew 6:7-15

7 “When you are praying, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard because of their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

9 “Pray then in this way:

Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name.

Your kingdom come.

Your will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts,

as we also have forgiven our debtors.

And do not bring us to the time of trial,

but rescue us from the evil one.

For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you;

but if you do not forgive others, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be your name in peoples across the world, of different races, colours and religions, single people, couples and families, people at work or out of work, at home or homeless.

May your kingdom come and your will be done on earth, in the ways in which we act, the choices which we make, and the action for change that we take.

Give us this day our daily bread: bread which we work for, food which we share, bread which no-one should be denied because of the greed of others.

Forgive us our trespasses: times when we have condemned instead of being constructive, times when we have not listened, times when we have failed to do what we know we should have done.

Lead us not into temptation: temptation to close our minds, temptation to be afraid to speak out against injustice, tempation to think there is no alternative.

Deliver us from evil: the evil of a world where people don’t count, the evil of powerlessness and loss of hope, the evil of a world where gates, walls and barriers grow ever higher, the evil of a world where money is more important than people.

Closing Prayer

Our Father

who is here on earth,

holy is your name,

in the hungry who share their bread and their song.

Your Kingdom come,

a generous land where confidence and truth reign.

Let us do your will,

being a cool breeze for those who sweat.

You are giving us your daily bread

when we manage to get back our lands

or get a fairer wage.

Forgive us

for keeping silent in the face of injustice,

and for burying our dreams.

Don’t let us fall into the temptation

of taking up the same arms as the enemy,

but deliver us from the evil which disunites us;

and we shall have believed in humanity and in life,

we shall have known your Kingdom

which is being built for ever and ever.
